New Jem And The Holograms dolls: Who Is He Kissing giftset

The last doll line presentation for Integrity Toys in 2013 was last Friday. Two emails were send to W Club members, who always have the privilege of getting first the relative information. The first was about a Jem And The Holograms giftset. Based on one of the most popular looks of the original TV series, the giftset, named "Who Is He Kissing",  features both Jem and Jerrica Benton dolls wearing their corresponding version of the Flip Side fashion called "Getting Down to Business", which was sold as a stand alone costume in the original 80's toy line by Hasbro. The two-doll set arrives at Integrity Toys dealers soon and is available for pre-order now.

What are Flip Side fashions? According to Integrity Toys, they were created as a clever way to "transform" the original Jerrica Benton doll into her alter-ego, the mysterious rock star Jem. "Flip Side" fashions are basically reversible or transformable costumes that can be used to create multiple looks out of the same matching pieces. Flip Sides were typically composed of a more conservative, yet ultra-feminine "business like" look to match Jerrica Benton's stoic personality and a more fun/glamorous stage look for Jem. The various looks could be achieved by either removing or adding certain parts of the costume or sometimes, by turning the components inside out.

The original Flip Side fashions always came with a hat to hide the doll's pink hair strands to further help create the illusion that the doll was in fact two dolls in one. The updated version by the Integrity Toys design team, the two looks are clearly defined on separate dolls and more in-tune with the way these cool costumes were portrayed on the original TV series. All of the pieces are included to create the two distinctive, yet matching looks that totally pay homage to the creative work of the team who worked on the original Hasbro line back in the 80s.

While I am sure this will make Jem fans really happy, and also give the chance to those who missed the first Jem and Jerrica dolls to get one now, I have one simple question: why not use the quick switch system and make one doll with two different heads able to switch to achieve each different look? Wasn't that the reason the system was invented in the first place?

**Please note that the photos are of prototype dolls and subject to changes and modifications. Dolls are sold together as a set. Available from  Integrity Toys dealers.

Along with the giftset, two stage accessory packs were made available to order as well. These will be available from IT Direct only. 1. So... Im a huge Jem fan, and have been doing everything I can to get my hands on these lines. While I did order this two pack (and appreciate the lower price point - 2 pack is cheaper than two separate dolls total), I thought this was kind of a cheesy move by integrity... we want the really extravagant "outrageous" outfits, and while these were kind of important (used in the commercial breaks for the show, etc), are also kind of lackluster. Also, I know we would like to see more characters, like... I dont need 5 different Jem dolls at a $120 dollar price point. Also, the Stage Essentials packs, while interesting, are also kind of lame. Not buying additional dolls to display with these instruments, and since the dolls came with instruments already, not needed at a $75 dollar price point. I would have much rather just gotten the jackets at a lower SRP. I just hope the line picks up with additional characters, rather than easy to do reproductions in different colors, clothes, etc... end nerd rant.

  2. From what I know regarding this line (not a fan here), they release characters that Hasbro gives them license to. If the big heads there don't give their permission, no character.
Please remember that the first Jem doll was limited and available only at ComicCon, so that was off limits to many. These dolls give those people a chance to get a Jem doll.
As for the accessory packs, I think these are more for those who do not have Jem line dolls and want to add the accessories to their other dolls - at least that's what it looks to me. Maybe someone who is a fan and knows more about this line releases can illuminate this issue more for all of us.

  3. The accessory packs were created because a lot of fans were complaining that the dolls came with different instruments than what the characters used in the Jem animated series. The Integrity dolls were released with the same instruments the original 1980's dolls came with by Hasbro's request. However, on the cartoon the characters used different instruments. For example, Kimber Benton comes with a keytar but on the show she always played a stand up floor model keyboard. Aja Leith used the white guitar in the first five episodes of the show. 5. i want to add that i have been collecting Jem since the initial test market Christmas 1985, with the
original Jem/Jerrica with post earrings. i was over the moon when Hasbro & Integrity announced Hollywood Jem would be an SDCC exclusive. NOW we have the Stingers. what is there to complain about? i will honestly tell you i do not love everything that has been released, and i do not agree with every choice the designers have made with the line. but there IS a Jem line. and it was designed and developed CAREFULLY to please the fans and collectors of Jem. i mean, Synergy came with the master taped of Jacqui Benton... need i say more?

  6. i have been collecting Jem since the initial test-market Christmas 1985 Jem/Jerrica with post earrings. it was the most amazing doll i had ever seen, and was in love with the micro episodes
on Super Sunday. when Hasbro & Integrity announced the exclusive Hollywood Jem doll for SDCC,
i was blown away. i have (so far) purchased all the pieces Integrity has offered for Jem And The Holograms. i will be honest and say i do not love everything that they have produced, nor do i agree with every choice the designers have made in creating this line. but they have done this for US, the fans and collectors of Jem. the line exists, Jem is out there, new items are in the works.
let's be excited, and hope that we see the character dolls we have been waiting for, and maybe a fashion or two.
if you want to see something in the line, WRITE A LETTER. the Integrity designers are fans too, and they are listening to what the fans are looking for.
